The Boys’ Brigade is a Christian organisation for boys between the ages of 5 and 18 years. It began in 1883 when William Alexander Smith founded the 1st Glasgow Company and it quickly spread worldwide. The 1st Belfast Company was formed in 1888 and the Belfast Battalion came into being in 1890. Belfast is currently the largest battalion in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Our 1st Carryduff Company here in Carryduff Presbyterian Church was formed in 1952 and in fact a 2nd Carryduff Company existed for a while during the 1970s and 80s in the Baptist Church.
The Boys’ Brigade motto is ‘Sure and Steadfast’ (Hebrews 6:19) and this can be seen on our badges and uniform. Our motto and objective have been in existence since the very first meeting when 1st Glasgow Company was formed.
The Object of the Boys’ Brigade is, ‘The advancement of Christ’s Kingdom among Boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-Respect, and all that tends towards a true Christian Manliness’. In line with this objective all 3 sections learn about God, our Saviour Jesus Christ and many other people, through stories in the Bible. We take part in games which teaches the boys teamwork, discipline, self-respect and respect for others. Craftwork and art enable the boys to explore their creative side, while the sketches we prepare for our display allows the boys to present themselves in front of an audience. As well as an education all of our activities include a massive dollop of fun!
In the Anchor Boys our programme is based on 5 areas, Body, Mind, Spirit, Community & Creativity. This enables the boys to have a fun filled night of games, activities and bible stories. Continuing into the Junior Section the boys take part in ‘Figure Marching’, which requires remembering where to go and what comes next and also work through the Junior Section programme named ‘Juniors’ which again allows for a fully tailored programme of boys in this age group. Then in the Company Section the boys take part in ‘Squad Drill’ and work to the Company Section programme named ‘Discover’. Again, in line with our objective all of these activities are designed so that the boys may grow up into fine, upright, young Christian men.
